Tom and Jessie were always best friends growing up. They had met each other at the age of 4 in gymnastics class, and realized that they lived within a couple blocks of each other. As the two of them grew up, they never had the same friends, but they always had each other. Their town was not privileged and there school was not special. They never did well, either, and at the end of school, again, all they had was each other. They felt it was a good idea to stick together, and they could make it somewhere. They ended up at the circus, because they knew at least they had mobility in common. During a show, Tom had the surest hands and Jessie could always trust him. However, on this day, as they prepared for the flying trapeze, Jessie felt great while Tom was worried because he hadn't disclosed the wrist he had sprained the day before. But he couldn't miss a show, for they had to earn their money. So as Jessie swung there, Tom writhed in pain, but completed the task. As he screamed, so did the crowd as she flew and made a perfect landing. Tom never said anything about it, but he didn't have to. He was doing what he wanted to do.
